Open Studios, Open Minds

Artists are not known for their love of public engagement; many shy away from public events and prefer the solitary activities involved in creating art. But today, perhaps more than ever, connecting with potential buyers is essential and can seem complicated - involving multiple social media platforms, websites and online sales, blogs, tutorials, attending openings, and conducting artist talks.

Art lovers, patrons and collectors delight in talking to artists about their stories, their inspiration and their practice, and the opportunity to see artists in action can be an extra enticement.

Open Studios programs are therefore a fabulous way for artists to engage with potential buyers; allowing visitors to see artists at work and chat with them about their practice one on one, while the artist can enjoy meeting people who are interested in their art in the comfort of their own studio, without the need to prepare a speech or stand in front of a crowd.

I’m thrilled to be taking part in Swan Open Studios in 2022, from 27 August to 4 September (Studio Opening Hours). Although the program has only been running for a couple of years, I am part of a diverse group of enthusiastic and committed artists. My studio is in my heritage-listed home in Guildford, which adds an especially personal element. I’m sure visitors will enjoy the historic features as much as the novelty of abstract art being created in such a traditional environment.

So what do you say to an artist? It’s ok not to understand something (I’m an abstract artist – I get that all the time!) and it’s really fine to ask genuine questions. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying I love talking about what inspires me and what I’m trying to express, especially when people are respectful in their curiosity. Mostly, be open to what you might learn about the artist and their work; you never know what might strike a chord for you.

I’ll be adding information about some of my fellow artists here, and more information is also available via Ellenbrook Arts .

Please support your local artists, check out some amazing artwork, and meet some great folks along the way. You might even find that perfect piece for your home or office.
