Established in the 17th century as James Powell & Sons, Whitefriars is steeped in the monastic history of their original location in the City of London. In 1923 they moved to Harrow, and the new location allowed further growth of this iconic glass maker. Sadly, after 300 years of glassmaking, the company closed its doors in 1980.
Geoffrey Baxter was a prominent British glass designer known for his work with Whitefriars. He joined the Whitefriars design team in 1954 and is celebrated for launching his successful textured glass range in 1967. His textured ‘bark’ vases are among his iconic designs.
Although influenced by the Scandinavian aesthetic, Baxter’s style was unique and distinct; he created designs that could compete in the British market while maintaining his own voice. His work is highly regarded and remains influential in the world of glass design.
This bark glass vase is the larger of two sizes at 19.2cm (7.5”) and is in Pewter coloured glass. The surface is highly textured and the glass is heavy and thick.
