Stuart Devlin Solid Silver Candlesticks c1972
This pair of solid silver candlesticks with shades by world-renowned gold- and silver-smith Stuart Devlin is truly a rare find.
Formally trained in Melbourne, Devlin rose to fame in 1964 when he was appointed to design the decimal currency for Australia and went on to design coinage for countries around the world.
When Devlin moved to London in 1965 he began to develop his own style and techniques to create limited editions of fine silver objects, often with textures and filigree detailing. He was commissioned to produce objects for major companies, as well as commemorative coins (including for the Sydney 200 Olympic Games) and various awards and medals for Australia.
In 1982 Devlin was appointed as Goldsmith and Jewellery Maker to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and was also appointed to the Order of Australia, as well as receiving multiple design awards.
These candlesticks are dated 1972 and demonstrate Devlin’s mastery of design and technique. The dramatically tapered bases sweep up to a conical capital and a circular lipped sconce. The sconces bear a small rim onto which the shades can be fitted. The shades are comprised of threads of pulled silver, fused into irregular filigree patterns in a modernist design. The elegant, polished columns are the perfect foil for the modernist (almost brutalist) shades, resulting in beautiful objects that are truly sculptural as well as functional.
These candlesticks are in good vintage condition, with signs of use and wear typical of their age and material. There are a few tiny indentations to the columns as might be expected with silver over time. They bear Stuart Devlin’s monogram along with the following hallmarks; lion passant (silver 925 English assay), Leopard (London), and date letter ‘r’ (1972).
